How to wear a tulle skirt

Tulle has a reputation. It's the fabric of ballet recitals and wedding veils, the one most women decide they've outgrown. This skirt makes a quiet case for bringing it back into an ordinary week.

It's built from row after row of soft ivory ruffles, layered so the whole skirt floats a little behind you when you walk. A wide, smooth elastic waistband keeps it easy to wear, and it falls to a long midi length that moves with every step.

For the day. Keep it soft and tonal. A cream fine-knit sweater tucked into the waistband, ankle boots in a warm tan, hair down. The colours stay close together so the texture does the talking, and the boots keep it grounded enough for errands, a long lunch or a walk across town.

For the evening. Swap the knit for a black bodysuit and add a heel. The contrast changes everything: the skirt reads less romantic and more deliberate, the kind of thing you wear to a dinner where you'd like to be remembered. Keep the jewellery to one good pair of earrings.

“Volume on the bottom asks for something close to the body on top.”

For the weekend. Try it with an oversized white shirt, sleeves pushed up and the front loosely tucked, and flat leather loafers or clean white sneakers. A little undone on top balances all that volume below.

A few things to know. The lining runs from the waistband to about 25 inches down, so the last tiers are sheer and catch the light as you move. The waist measures 25 inches relaxed and stretches comfortably to 32, with a 42 inch hip and a full length of 38 inches, which makes it a natural fit for sizes S to M.
